Beaching it Up
Every year, my wife’s family rents a beach house in the southern part of the Outer Banks in NC. This is to bring her side of the family together for some bonding and relaxation. However, for me, I was on an adventure. During the week, I took my camera and explored the area just south of Nags Head called Bodie Island all the way to the town of Buxton. In between are the beach towns of Avon, Rodanthe, Slavo, and Waves. There are also points of interest for local activities such as Pea Island Nature Conservancy, Rodanthe Fishing Pier, Cape Point Beach and wildlife area, Bodie Lighthouse, and the Oregon Inlet Old Coast Guard Station. I also found local shops, cafes, and restaurants. From sunrise to sunset, I was out exploring these areas, meeting locals, observing the beach goers, and making new little friends (Mr. Crab).
I began in the north and worked my way south. I was always met with a wonderful sunrise over the Atlantic Ocean. The dolphins were swimming about and the fishermen were on their way to the beach to cast their line. Upon traveling from point to point, there was no shortage of food stops and cafes. I have to say, they have some pretty good coffee down there. And in the afternoon heat, and nice cold creamy came in handy. Finding suffering was actually difficult. I spotted surfing areas, but the surfers and I were not on the same schedule. However, fishing was done everywhere and visitors and residents alike were hitting the beach.
Despite the heat and humidity, I was able to find some pretty cool locations along the Outer Banks. Not all are packed with sand and water, but rather the beach community feel. All the images were shot with the Sony A7RV, Sony 16-35 GMII, and Tamron 35-150.
